What "equal consideration" means
Every application submitted by 13 January is treated the same way, whether it arrived in September or at 5.59pm on deadline day. Submitting earlier does not change the decision rules, but it often means you hear back sooner: 61% of offers reported by students on OfferCheck arrived before the end of December. Remember your school also needs time to add your reference, so most schools set their own internal deadline weeks before 13 January.
How competitive is it?
In the 2025 cycle, 80% of 1,366,780 applications got an offer. The rate depends heavily on subject: 34% in medicine and dentistry, 83% in law, 83% in computing and 90% in psychology. Within each subject the range between universities is far wider, from around 10% at the most selective to almost everyone elsewhere. The lowest offer rate courses and subject guides for law, economics and psychology show the detail.
Before you submit
- Balance your five choices. Mix one or two ambitious courses with ones where your predicted grades meet or beat the typical offer.
- Check subject requirements. A missing required A-level is the quickest route to a rejection, whatever your grades.
- Check admissions tests. Some courses need the LNAT, TMUA or UCAT, with their own registration deadlines.
- Finish your personal statement. 2027 entry uses the three-question format. Our personal statement counter checks the length.
Applying close to the deadline
UCAS gets very busy in the last days before 13 January, and the deadline is 6pm, not midnight. Your school has to add its reference and predicted grades before the application reaches UCAS, so the real deadline for you is your school's internal one. If something goes wrong on the day, contact your school first: a late application is still possible, but it loses the guarantee of equal consideration.
If you are still choosing courses in December, start from your predicted grades. Pick courses whose typical offer matches them, then add one ambitious choice and one safer choice. The offer database lists typical offers and offer rates for every UK course we track, and OfferCheck checks the five together, including the chance that none of them makes an offer.
After the deadline
Decisions arrive from October to May, depending on the university (see when universities send offers). Once all five are in, you choose a firm and insurance (see which offer to firm). If you end up with no offers, Extra opens on 25 February 2027 and Clearing on 2 July 2027.

Add your predicted grades and courses. OfferCheck compares each one to its typical offer and offer rate, and flags the chance of ending up with no offers.
